The Pioneer 500 Automatic Transmission with Paddle Shift System!

If the 50'' width, 500cc engine or just the release of this all new Pioneer 500 Side-By-Side didn't get you excited then the news about the transmission certainly will!

"Upshift and downshift without ever having to take your hands off the wheel. You get to choose the exact gear you want for challenging terrain, and it’s engineered for precise, smooth shifts."

Unlike the belt-drive automatics out there, the Pioneer 500 features a transmission that uses rugged, steel gears. You get true compression braking for superior controllability (especially when descending hills), as well as long transmission life.

TO HONDA, I am mad as hell now. I bought a 700-4 when it first hit the show room. My biggest complaint has been that I can't change the gears when I want to like my Rincon. The 700-4 is strictly automatic. Why didn't someone tell me that yhey were going to come out with the paddle shifters. Is there going to be a way to change or upgrade my 700 because this strictly automatic sucks for trail riding. It gears down too hard and too often.

I don't think they are even going to be offering the paddle shift in the Pioneer 700 are they? I think this is only announced so far on the 500?

The only thing I don't like about the paddle shifters is it doesn't have an automatic feature, though having to shift every time is definitely better than not having control over the shifts.

Hmmm I could see how that could be a pain sometimes. Do you own a 500?

No, I have a Foreman 500, one of my friends has a Big Red, and another has the 500 rubicon automatic, and I've ridden an automatic 420 rancher with the 5 speed that had both a manual and auto 5 speed. So far my favorite shift setup was on the 420, it had a manual up/down shift button, or you could put it in ESP mode and it would shift itself. I don't like the Rubicon at all.

Sounds like the 420 was set up just right. Do we know for sure that the Pioneer 500 doesn't have the ESP mode?

First... websites like this one do influence one's decision to buy.

I will comment on this one even though I have only owned one for a few hours and drove it around the property with my 2yr old and 1 yr old going crazy on the passenger side. The cup holders are sized for cans and not for the tervis tumbler I usually have in my hand...which means you are holding a drink in your hand unless everything you drink is In a 12oz can. Hitting the shifters with a cup in one hand is a challenge although not impossible. After throwing down the cup and riding for a little while, the shifting became 2nd nature. So far, it is really fun to drive.

Re: The Pioneer 500 Automatic Transmission with Paddle Shift System!

During the Labor Day weekend I took my pioneer 500 to an ATV park. A couple times while in 5th gear going about 30ish it felt like the transmission wanted to come out of gear. My son asked me what that sound was. I didn't know. The engine revved up like it wasn't in gear then went back into 5th. Paddles weren't touched.

That's weird. What it almost like the belt was slipping?

It felt like a belt slip, but no belts in the pioneer. Maybe the electric shift was trying to shift again. I don't know

    I have 130 km on my pioneer 500, L 2 , 3, 4, are all.very short.
What I mean is I'm shift so.quickly that.
    In 5 seconds I'm.in 5.gear
I run 5 gear. From 30 Kim all the way to top speed.
I.only.drop gears for ascending and.descending hills
As far a transmission slip feel
    To.hard to.say it's not even.broken in yet
    To me.it feels.hard and clunkky .

It does become easier as you use it. I haven't felt a slip, yet. I'd return to the dealer if I felt something wasn't right
