    2014 Honda Pioneer 700 4 question: STUMPED

I have a 2014 Honda Pioneer 700 4. It has 520 hours on it with no motor modifications. A few weeks ago it started backfiring and cutting out with loss of top end speed. Now, Ive already had the spark arrester issue a few years ago and have checked that. Machine is not acting lke that at all. Its in contact. Here is what we have checked: Spark plug (has on one this model), exhaust leak, fuel pressure, air intake, checked codes, adjusted valves, new gas, oil change, you name it. Did all that and it still backfires, has cut out completely under full throttle. Scratching our heads here, any ideas?? Thanks!!

Did you ever resolve this? Fighting the same issue now with a 2-plug 2015 700-4. Checked timing, valves, camshaft (including cam lobe specs), compression, plus all you mentioned... Cleaned throttle body, checked exhaust for obstructions, replaces head and thermostat gasket.... New fuel. Changed oil.

At speed, it loses power and backfires like crazy!

    Help!

Did you ever figure this issue out? I'm having the same issue on my 2014 model. Twarnock, how did you check camshaft? Mine is running great until you get it up to speed and it won't go past 20-25 mph and sometimes start backfiring.

I've tried everything I know. I'm at the point I'm going to take it into the shop for repair.

    Thanks.

We checked the specs with a micrometer on the intake and exhaust lobes on the camshaft (which means we took it out.). It’s now been at the dealer for 2 weeks. They’ve got no idea either. They’ve checked coil, sensors, replaced camshaft, fuel pump/pressure... still no answers. They’re talking with Honda tech support. I’ll try and keep you posted. Let me know if you figure anything’s out! Everyone here is stumped!

Well I took my Pioneer apart last night. The camshaft lobe closest to the intact has a flat spot on it and the cam follower is cupped on the bottom. I call the dealership I bought it at and he immediately told me it was poor air filter maintenance. Which I argued. He says it was common on the big red models and on the pioneer. I told him I've seen 2 other pictures besides mine and the same lobe was the issue. I find it hard to believe that the dirt/dust getting thru the air filter would only mess up the same lobe on the intact side. Here is a picture of my camshaft.

Re: 2014 Honda Pioneer 700 4 question: STUMPED

I wish I had good news. The dealer in Sumter SC kept our machine for 5 months. They talked with Honda tech support, sent videos, took measurements, etc. They supposedly swapped EVERYTHING on the Honda - some multiple times to account for new parts that might be DOA (computer, etc.). After 5 months, all they discovered was a small crack in the non-essential part of the piston (which we replaced, even though we knew it had nothing to do with the problem.) $700 in diagnostic and the piston repairs, and we picked the Honda back up NOT REPAIRED. They said they didn't know what else to do except replace the motor.
We listed the Honda for sale - with FULL disclosure on what we had done and what the problem was. Someone purchased it (actually, we traded it) and said they were sure they knew what the problem was and could fix it. :-) Best of luck to them and you. Since then, I've talked to one person who said they at least had an idea. (And, since I'm not a mechanic, I'm not sure it even makes sense, but I'll repeat it here in the event it's at least a clue.) They said that the timing was off, and that it's possible that the flywheel was incorrectly positioned on the shaft. They suggested we look at the flywheel key and see if it was damaged, which would allow it to slip slightly on the shaft. No idea, and since we don't own the unit...
Good luck! Even though we don't own one anymore, I'd love to hear that someone figured it out and fixed it!
