Rack and pinion growling noise... Help?

Hey guys, i have a 2010 Bigred with 1000 miles on it. It has a 2" Highlifter lift kit and 14" Maxis Bighorns. Never had trouble then all of the sudden i am getting a squaking ( is that a word) or growling noise in the rack and pinion. It feels and sounds like it is under the right rack boot. Just sounds dry and frictiony. Has anyone experianced this? What to do....

Re: Rack and pinion growling noise... Help?

I had a similar issue with my arctic cat....I could not find the problem until I noticed the welds holding my front diff broke completely and was causing all kinds of issues. Built a new bracket and a buddy welded it up (i didnt weld at that time).

I am not saying that is your issue, but if you cant find anything else wrong, check your welds. Mine was worse turning right than left as the welds were broke on the left side.

Re: Rack and pinion growling noise... Help?

i went to the dealer and asked about the rack and pinion. There is a rack (of course) and a pinion gear and two bushings. One on the left and one on the right. The dealer told me that it should be covered under warranty. They have not had any issues with this and did not even have a rack and pinion boot and clamp. They say that there is very little issues with this. I will take it in and have them look it over.If it is full of mud and grit and no warranty i will buy the boots and over haul my self. The bushings and boots are available and reasonably priced. I will check the welds and mounting to make sure all good before i take it in. Thanks for the heads up!

I hope it's not the welds....they won't cover that unless a noted recall failure or a very very very helpful dealership.

Check in on the ground, tires left and right, then take the weight off the tires and check the welds again-tires left and right.

Re: Rack and pinion growling noise... Help?

Update! I took my machine to the dealer. We agreed that the rack and pinion was growling. The rack and pinion mounting rubbers were loose as well. The dealer is replacing the rack and pinion, mounting rubber hold downs, new boots and clamps (they called them bellows) all under warranty. I did buy an extended warranty and it is covered. My Big Red is a 2010 and i invested in a 4 year total warranty. Thanks Dealer! It is suposed to be ready to pick up tomorrow. I will mention the "power dealer's" name tomorrow and give more kudos if it is 100% covered. I will try to get more details so i can post in the event we can share and learn from this.

Re: Rack and pinion growling noise... Help?

Well, I got my Big Red back and as promised it was covered under the extended warranty. New rack and pinion assembly and rubber mounting supports. The assembly is mounted tighter (no side to side movement) and the growling is gone. Thanks and kudo's to Honda of Russellville Arkansas for the service. They never questioned the issue and all is well. I used to have a road walk and had to move the steering wheel left to right but now i just hold it still especially on the road. Good job and thanks Honda of Russellville AR! First Class dealer!
