Take a look here and here for some good info. I did a quick search for 'back protector' and found these 2 informative topics. ;)

Ummm....back protectors are supposed to protect your spine and other vital areas. Why would you not want to wear one?

edit: duh...couldn't complete a link.

Cyclegear has the technic 7 link on sale for $49.99. I just bought one today. It felt more comfortable than the dainese, but probably doesn't protect as well. Not bad for the price. :)

I got a Bohn.

Why? Cause I like the way they sit on your back and protect more than just the spine. It is comfortable as well. Costs a little more but definitely worth the money IMO.

Highly recommend it. Don't skimp on safety gear and make sure it is comfortable, cause if it isn't, you won't wear it.

What gear do you wear when you ride? I got the Carbon Kevlar from Bohn becuase it's thin and fits under my leathers and covers the tail bone. My Honda leather jacket has two pads in it already (one covering the back/spine and one that covers my traps/upper spine, and the Bohn suppliments them. It's comfortable too. I decided against the turtle shells due to comfort. Here is some addl info on back protectors.
