Hello,

I have a 2008 Big Red. I never GPS'd it but it used to go 20-25mph-ish. Now it only goes 5mph-ish. I don't know what happened, a group took it for a week, when it came back, it lost all top speed. They all claim nothing happened.

I've changed the oil, filter, spark plug. No change. It still starts right up.
What else can I do?
Is there a thread I missed when searching?

Thank you for any help.

It could be a sensor issue. I know in cars they have what is called "limp mode" where they don't stop running but limit how fast it can go or how high the engine will rev. I've had a crank sensor die on me that did it. I would expect the yellow engine light would come on but never heard of it before on the BR so who knows. You may need to bring it to a dealer to have the computer checked.

Thats what I'm afraid of. I have a manual on the way to figure out how to test all of the sensors (there are a lot of them). The dealer didn't know of a BR limp mode but the recon 700 has one so maybe.

running GN4 when symptoms started, then switched to Parts Unlimited oil that I run in all the quads when I changed it.
yea might want to check the level then.

make sure that new oil is good for wet clutch use.

if its revving up then its not an engine issue, its gonna be trans.

That's what I thought too, but it was doing it before the oil change. I even tried running it high and low on oil, now it is back to perfect level. It is good for wet clutch, I use it in dirt bikes too. Its not reving like it used to, the engine only revs a little past engagement. It does the same in mistral, only revs a little, too weak to even be a limp mode. It will barely climb my driveway. Won't climb out of the standard ditch unless its towed (used to tow mowers out with the BR). The Honda dealer 7 miles away said they couldn't service it. The BR dealer 80 miles away has me on their schedule but they are booked two weeks out. Most of the troubleshooting steps I read in the BR manual involve special Honda computer testers. The fuel pressure and primary test right.

have ya left the battery disconnected for any period of time, maybe clear out some codes?

maybe re-seat all your connections and slap some dielectric grease on them.

will it rev up in neutral?

I'll try the battery thing next.

No, it only revs a little in neutral, the same amount as in gear under load, maybe 3.5k or less.

Have you looked at the throttle cable? Maybe a stick got it and it's now just not giving full throttle.
