I am selling my 954RR and considering buying a couple of dirt bikes, most likely Honda.

Although they will never be raced, I am a highly experienced street rider/intermediate off-road rider and will push my own limits from time to time.

I want a bike that will be good on the trails and the occasional MX track (not racing), but also good on the paved/dirt/rock roads that I need to travel to get to there. I'm 5'10 and about 210lbs. I'm looking at the 400R, or maybe the 250R or 250X. Can someone tell me if the 250 is powerful and comfortable enough for my purposes? I sat on the 650 just for fun...what a machine!!! The dealer had to hold it up and let me climb over it like a horse! :D

The second bike will be for my wife. 5'8 and around 120lbs, with a very long inseam. She will just be learning to ride, but has a lot of off-road/downhill experience on mtn bikes. Is something like the 150F enough bike/tall enough or should I be looking at the 230 or 250 for her as well?

Are the smaller bikes street legal? What does it take to get them there? Thanks for the help!

I can't wait to own a dirtbike again someday... I tell myself that I'd get a 450r or 450x but really I think the bike for me would be an xr650. Good do-everything bike and XR's are virtually indestructible, whereas those racebikes are going to need to be rebuilt every so often.

Thanks Conq. I don't think I'm really looking for a true dual-sport bike, just something I can ride the back roads in VT without getting hassled on my way to a trail. My father-in-law rides an ancient 185 with headlight/taillight and has no problems.
