My wife (Physical therapist) wants me to get some new boots before my race on July 24th.

Ankle protection is of the highest priority. Right now the Teknic Speedstar boot is at the top of the list, but at $400 is a tough pill to swallow. She will probably spend the money as we both agree that it is still way cheaper than the alternative, but I thought I would ask you all for opinions.

I think whatever brand I get I'll probably get that brands best model.

The Sidi Vertebra is probably second on the list.

W/ the Alpinestars SMX-Plus being thrid.

Sooooo, whatcha think?

I own both and have to say that the SMX Plus feels like it provides more ankle support for me. The SMX also has an inner boot that laces up to provide additonal bracing. The only downside is that the zipper is a little hard to get up if you have larger calves.

The Sidi is also a great boot but mine squeak like crazy, so I feel like Frankenstein walking around in them!

The Daytona Security is the absolute best boot, but are very pricey at around $700. They do offer an alternative, the Evo Basic, which gives the same protection for a couple hundred less. Still expensive, but worth it. The difference is that the inner hard boot is made by machine instead of handmade carbon.

The Alpinstar Supertechs, in my opinion, offer almost just as good protection for less, I think mine were around $300. They used to have metal sliders on them, which was a problem with some race organizations, so look into that. If you have big calves, the Supertechs won't fit, so try them on before ordering.

What size do you where, as I have a near new set of SMX+ for sale for 150.00?

my choices:

Daytona, Supertech, SMX+...

I don't like any of the sidi's I have seen. Which is a shame, I love their MTB shoes... Maybe they will come out with a better model next year.

I've been less than impressed with the Sidis I've seen, too. That plastic "ankle brace" on the outside is a flimsy joke. If you don't want to spend the $$$ for Daytonas (I didn't  ) and the Alpinestars will fit you around the calf, I'd go with the Supertechs or SMX+ :twocents:
