I hope I've chosen the right section to post this thread.

I need to mount my radar detector on my bike but am at a loss as to where to mount it.

my thoughts so far:

I can't use a stem stand as I've got an ohlins damper which will get in the way.

the master cylinder mount will get in the way of the tacho and speedo so not too keen on that one

I was thinking of mounting it on the triple clamp next to the left fork - but it will be exposed to the sun/rain so not all that keen on that one, but will be pointing in the right direction and have a reasonable line of sight.

OR
Above the digital screen flush with the windshield, but then it's pointing downwards and doens't have a line of sight through the clear screen, but is well out of the way.

I've got a Bel 990 international so it's a bit chunkier than the Escort 8500 and V1.

another thought is to just put it under the pillion seat then it's not in the way and is well out of sight- but I'm unsure of the effectiveness of the detector given there's a whole lot of plastic and metal in the way- not to mention my arse.

any thoughts/ suggestions/experiences/pictures most appreciated.

Thanks

Ben.

I used the master cylinder mount from Stem Stand, and it DID NOT block the view of the tach/speedo. This was on my 929. I sold it to a member here, hopefully they will chime in.

Oh OK thanks, I haven't seen one mounted, things looked like they'd get obscured with the BMC mount, anyone got a picture of it on their bike?

Cheers

Here's a picture of my detector. Mounted on the brake res. It works and it is out of the way of the tach/temp guage. I did have to customize it a little to get it working good though. I ride some pretty bumpy goat trails. The beating took it's toll on the OEM aluminum bracket that holds the brake res. to the perch. After a while (4-5 months) the bracket broke. I replaced it with a bracket I made out of steel. That fixed that problem, which was the only problem with the brake res mount.

With the detector there, it's hard to see the radar display though. You can see in the picture the remote display above the speedo. Also Legal Speeding's HARD setup works great for sending an alert wirelessly to your helmet.

www.legalspeeding.com/product.htm also sells a sport bike detector mount. It requires you to drill some holes in the windscreen. This mount would eliminate having to use a remote display because it's already positioned for better visibility. My friend uses a bracket he made to mount a detector in the same place as the "sport bike mount" and it works just fine, even with it at an angle.

As far as the detector being behind plastic, even non-clear plastic doesn't affect it much (according to V1's website). The plastic will make a big different with Laser though.

mine passport8500 is mounted right above the speedo at an angle ( i have a smoked DB screen), it hasnt affected its radar sensitivity at all. I also have a HARD system transmitter in there also and have the remote lightsticking out of the cheekpiece of my arai quantum f helmet in my range of vision. Im not worried about laser cuz as far as I know they don't use it here in the CA central valley.. as far as i know.. anyone know different?

Thanks for the info guys,

I think I've sussed out a spot to put it, I'll send some pics in once I've got it all sorted out.

I'm going to make a bracket from the left hand mirror support for the detector to sit on, or so the plan goes- I may run into problems and end up mounting it on the BMC reservoir.

Cheers

If you run into trouble making one, you can buy something like that here (not sure if they ship down-under).

Hey John.
Did you mount ur detector to the screen? i mean is ur detector at the same angle as ur screen? I'm trying to figure out how i can mount mine so Leos wont see the detector, when they park beside me at the light. The only idea i had is use valcro and mount the detector to the screen. Only concern i had is how much of performance i will lose. Because detector will be facing down.

I bolted my V1 directly to the my ZG Double Bubble windscreen using the mount that came with the detector. It worked well...didn't bounce, vibrate, or block the gauges.

Has mounting your V1 directly in front of you affected your rear antenna's sensitivity? Im assuming your rear antenna is being blocked by your body. I have a V1 in my truck, but an 8500 on my bike.

Your detector needs to be as level as possible and have a clear view of the road. Plastic shouldnt affect the sensitivity, but metal and carbon fiber will. Ive moved my detector from my 929 to my zx10, and am currently using a mount i bought from Radar detectors and jammers reviewed by retired cop. A great source for any radar detector info is Radar detector jammer forum: Index .
