Hooking to the main battery like you mentioned is the way most owners do it.
When the main battery is charged, the tru-isolator opens and charges your secondary battery.
Just FYI, the tru-isolator will work either way.
If you hooked the tender to the secondary battery, when it is charged, the tru-isolator would open and charge the main.

Most hook to the main, because if the tender is not strong enough to get the battery fully charged, it will NOT open the tru-isolator. In that scenario, the secondary battery would not be charged.
